Which regime is better for tax year 2026-27?

For most salaried people the new regime: income up to ₹12.75 lakh (salary) has no tax, and rates are lower. The old regime wins only with large deductions - typically HRA in a city, a home loan, full 80C, NPS and health insurance together. The calculator shows the exact break-even for your salary.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?

Under the new regime, yes: the rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free, and salaried people also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above that, marginal relief means you never pay more tax than the income above ₹12 lakh.

Can I switch regimes every year?

Salaried people without business income can choose either regime every year, both with the employer for TDS and again when filing the return. Those with business income can move back to the old regime only once.

Are 80C and HRA still available under the new Income-tax Act?

Yes, in the old regime. The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbered the sections, but the deductions and limits for tax year 2026-27 are the same. The new regime still doesn't allow them.

Is employer NPS deductible in the new regime?

Yes. The employer's contribution to NPS is deductible up to 14% of basic + DA in the new regime (10% in the old). It's one of the few deductions the new regime allows - worth asking your employer about.

Should I buy insurance to save tax?

Buy term insurance and health insurance because you need protection. Avoid endowment and money-back policies bought only for 80C - their returns are usually low and the lock-in is long. And if the new regime is better for you, there's no tax benefit at all.
