Why people use Bachatova
Every January, HR asks for investment proofs and people rush into insurance policies and ELSS they don't need - often without checking whether the old regime is even worth it any more. Since the new regime made income up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh for salaried people) effectively tax-free and lowered rates, the old regime only wins if you have large deductions: HRA in a big city, a home loan, full 80C, NPS and health insurance. The answer depends on your exact numbers, and the free calculators online stop at the two totals. Bachatova calculates both regimes exactly for tax year 2026-27, shows how much in deductions you'd need for the old regime to win, and then gives you a plan: which regime to declare to your employer, which deductions you're already entitled to but not claiming, what (if anything) is worth investing in for tax, and the proof deadlines - in plain language, with no product sales.
- ✓ Exact tax under both regimes for tax year 2026-27: slabs, standard deduction, rebate with marginal relief, surcharge and cess
- ✓ Break-even: the deductions you'd need for the old regime to beat the new one at your salary
- ✓ HRA exemption calculated from basic, HRA received and rent (50% metro / 40% non-metro)
- ✓ Deductions you're missing: 80C headroom, NPS 80CCD(1B), employer NPS, 80D for parents, home and education loan interest
- ✓ A plan by goal and risk, not by tax: PPF, EPF/VPF, ELSS, NPS, insurance - only where they make sense for you
- ✓ What to declare to your employer, proof deadlines and how to switch regime when you file
- ✓ Updated for the Income-tax Act, 2025 (tax year replaces FY/AY)

Frequently asked questions
Which regime is better for tax year 2026-27?
For most salaried people the new regime: income up to ₹12.75 lakh (salary) has no tax, and rates are lower. The old regime wins only with large deductions - typically HRA in a city, a home loan, full 80C, NPS and health insurance together. The calculator shows the exact break-even for your salary.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?
Under the new regime, yes: the rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free, and salaried people also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above that, marginal relief means you never pay more tax than the income above ₹12 lakh.
Can I switch regimes every year?
Salaried people without business income can choose either regime every year, both with the employer for TDS and again when filing the return. Those with business income can move back to the old regime only once.
Are 80C and HRA still available under the new Income-tax Act?
Yes, in the old regime. The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbered the sections, but the deductions and limits for tax year 2026-27 are the same. The new regime still doesn't allow them.
Is employer NPS deductible in the new regime?
Yes. The employer's contribution to NPS is deductible up to 14% of basic + DA in the new regime (10% in the old). It's one of the few deductions the new regime allows - worth asking your employer about.
Should I buy insurance to save tax?
Buy term insurance and health insurance because you need protection. Avoid endowment and money-back policies bought only for 80C - their returns are usually low and the lock-in is long. And if the new regime is better for you, there's no tax benefit at all.
How much does it cost?
The calculator is free and unlimited. Your first full plan each day is free; after that, ₹99 buys a plan with 3 revisions. No subscription.
